This book was such an enjoyable read, I could not wait to read chapter after chapter and hear all about each new dog. You get a real look into this family of authors and what the dogs have meant to them over the years. You will see your own dog in theirs, even when they are a little mischievous or it's time for the rainbow bridge, the joy a dog brings for years out weighs the rest. This would be a great gift for anybody, especially animal lovers!!

You will recognize one of your dogs or family members when you read this book and it will make you smile. You may even want to get a second or third dog, even if you already have one. "Follow the Dog" is a memoir about all the dogs owned by three generations of the Walsh family as told by members of each generation. That structure gives the reader the perspective of three points of view. Each dog owned by the family has its own story and the tales are as varied as the dogs themselves. The authors don't always agree and have "creative discussions" along the way like all families do which leads the reader to the conclusion that this is as much a story about families as it is about dogs. The dogs are a refuge of love and a source of blessing and stability when the family goes through transitions and changes, good times and bad times. One of my favorite descriptions was about a German Shepherd at a breeder's home when its owner left the room, "To my right, I saw Argus staring a hole through me. He never moved and I'm not sure he even blinked. I probably didn't either. It was as intimidating as a girl's tough father answering the door on her first date." I recommend you get this book and read it. You will be reminded about the value of family, and of course, those four-legged creatures that win our hearts, and make us do things we never dreamed we'd be doing. -by Buck Dopp
Good read for dog lovers. While there are some definite sad parts, as all dog lovers have experienced, it's still upbeat. It's a families experience with the dogs they have had in their lives over 3 generations and the bond you have with them. They are not all perfect, but who is? You love them in spite of their downfalls. I also feel like I "have" to have a dog in my life or I'm not complete. They give you unconditional love like no other and they are always there for you. It was nice to read about one families love of dogs over 3 generations. I have handed that same love for dogs down to my children.
What a great heartwarming read for anyone who owns, is thinking about owning or just plain loves dogs. In simple and easy to relate to prose this memior exemplifies the emotions and unconditional love we share with our best little friends. The book is a quick read and very enjoyable. I loved hearing the multigenerational perspective of dog ownership and the candid verbiage used in the narration from Bob, Kevin and young Samantha. There were bits and pieces of each dog story that I could relate to in my own life which brought the book home. One of the highlights was cuddling and playing with my dog as she sat next to me while reading.
A really good story and apparently factual one-family history of their life and their dogs. When I got about halfway through and the story got more "contemporary", I had to stop for a while. The dog losses started getting to me. The writing has been fun, easy reading. I think maybe because i fairly recently lost an old dog I'd had for 17 yrs. (he was 6 weeks old) I took a break. I would also have to say it did give me some ideas on "dog training" and fun things to do with a dog that I hadn't experienced. All in all, I have really enjoyed this family story.
A must-read, the loving and funny stories of the Walsh Dogs will strike a chord with anyone who has ever loved a dog. I purchased this book when it came out on and read through it in one sitting. What I loved most about the book is the different voices of the authors throughout. This is a story about dogs but woven through each memory is an intimate glimpse into a loving clan and wonderful family. I would cry a bit and with the turn of the page I'd be laughing again (to quote my favorite movie, Steel Magnolias "laughter through tears is my favorite emotion"). Reading this book is a nice break that reminded me of what's important - family and the undying love a dog can bring.
