When I pruchased this book, I was not aware that it is not a stand alone, It did not take long to figure out the relationships and history of the main characters. The book kept moving forward at a good clip, and the characters were different and interesting. I particularly liked Princess Alex. Mako was a little too brazen for my tastes. Karl was a superb sidekick. Hey, what can I say except I thoroughly enjoyed the book and now intend to read the other 4.
